The London-based firm helps companies get to know their customers better by using data from loyalty schemes and other sources to tell them what shoppers want, need and expect and then how to respond in a relevant way. Founded in 1989 by husband and wife team Edwina Dunn and Clive Humby, the company began working with Tesco five years later. The supermarket giant, which had become the majority owner, has just bought the couple's remaining shares to fully own the company which employs 584 staff in the UK and 1,400 people around the world. It lists among its clients Kellogg's, Heinz, Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble.
Employees not only feel their job is secure (73%, placing it in the top third of companies on this question), they are excited about where the organisation is going (77%). Dunn and Humby, who from March 1 stepped down from their roles as chief executive and chairman, to take up non-executive posts, have been popular and inspirational leaders (78%, a top 25 score), working alongside staff of all grades in an open-plan office. Breakfast sessions have been held for all employees to get to know new leader, Simon Hay, the UK and Ireland managing director, who will take over as chief executive.
In the past year dunnhumby has introduced monthly focus groups for staff with senior managers and the leadership team, enhanced training for middle to senior managers and has relaunched its employee forum. The firm provides a tailored training programme with personal reviews carried out every six months and everyone has their own career manager, giving staff the confidence to believe they can make a difference in the organisation (77%). The experience they gain from their job is valuable for their future (78%) and they think that future will involve developing within the organisation (71%).
More than 70% of workers earn more than £35,000 a year, including insight analysts who make about £50,850. Employees are happy with pay and benefits (65%) and think they are paid fairly for the work they do relative to people in similar positions in other companies (60%).
The firm takes part in a variety of one-day volunteering projects each year and this support of worthy causes is not driven by a desire for good publicity, say employees (63%, ranking it 22nd).
Staff get two additional days off when they get married and five and 10-year anniversaries with the firm are marked by five days off in that year. Other perks include a visit from a massage therapist and osteopath once a week, profit-related pay, free private healthcare for staff and their family, free and subsidised sports facilities, a travel-to-work season ticket and a contributory pension.
