I want to work for a company that invests in me

As a graduate hire, I entered dunnhumby’s eight-week training program. It was a holistic education of dunnhumby, the CPG industry, software training and personal development. Subject matter experts from around the company came in to explain their industry experience and the way that dunnhumby work. One of the highlights was definitely lunching with dunnhumby founders Edwina and Clive.

My training didn’t stop after graduation from the summer program though. Since then I’ve received one to one education from colleagues and mentors as every person in dunnhumby is actively engaged in growing the talent of graduate hires. I’ve set up meetings with colleagues of all levels to gain industry knowledge on topics related to my role. Every single invitation was accepted without hesitation! dunnhumby also offers ‘deep dives’ to allow you to explore a relevant topic of interest in more depth. These have really helped build my confidence before speaking to clients.

What training will I be given?

When I joined dunnhumby, I was amazed to see the diverse educational backgrounds of my colleagues. The list included engineers, Masters in Statistics and Economics and many others. I realised that the characteristics dunnhumby were looking for were an intelligence and curiosity that could be applied to produce great customer insights.

That’s why we have had all the training we’ve needed to thrive in our jobs since arriving. The graduate development programme covers all aspects of the company that you work with, from the core values to the technology you use. That training has been continuous since my arrival, as you always need to know the latest things both with reference to the technology we use and the business we work in.

Key to my job is the software we use, which I had never used before. The training that I’ve taken means I’m now completely confident approaching even the complex analysis that my job requires. You also learn from the fantastic people around you, who are always keen to help you if you need it.

I want to be the best I can be

I have taken training courses for various different things e.g. time management, project management. The main skill I have acquired at dunnhumby though is technical. I have done SAS training courses from beginner up to an advanced level. I now actually teach one of the intermediate courses myself.

Outside classroom courses, I am fortunate to work closely with many very experienced people who are very generous with their time. They help me develop my full range of skills, by helping me to learn new things each day. This ranges from technical skills in SAS and with other technologies, to how deliver training more effectively.

How will the company I work for make me the best I can be?

Your first few weeks at dunnhumby are what I call ‘dunnhumby Summer Camp’. For eight weeks, you and the other Graduates learn about every area of our business and the Cincinnati region. Classes are taught by experts from all over the company and the social activities are planned by prior Grads. Having exposure across the business helped me become instantly comfortable discussing our capabilities and client offerings once I joined my team.

My personal experience of how dunnhumby invest in and recognize my learning and development is that just a year after joining, I’ve actually been asked to run some of the sessions!

While dunnhumby helps develop your knowledge of our business, it also acknowledges that you may want to some more in-depth knowledge of a specific area of interest as well. There are ‘deep dives’ led by senior members of the company and dunnhumby even pays for further qualifications if that’s a direction you want to go in.
