U.S. Grocery Retail RPI

By Eric Karlson, Erich Kahner and Natalia Rojas

Since 2018, dunnhumby’s Retailer Preference Index (RPI) has been the mechanism to prepare retailers for the evolving needs of customers, based on insights from 10,000 U.S. shoppers about what matters to them most when shopping at 60-plus retailers. Our RPI — which has also helped retailers in Mexico, Brazil, the EU, Australia, and Southeast Asia — reveals which retailers are winning with customers and why. It does so by uncovering how customers perceive stores through seven different preference drivers, and it identifies how these perceptions affect both their emotional connection with shoppers as well as their long and short-term financial performance.

Our newest edition of the U.S. Retailer Preference Index will include additional data sources focused on eCommerce and omnichannel performance, to help retailers position themselves to win more customers than the competition, even as uncontrollable events continue to wreak havoc in the market.
