Women in Data wrap up

On Thursday 12 September we were proud to partner with Women in Data UK to host a meet-up event for the data science community at our Manchester office.

A panel of dunnhumby and industry specialists exploring the theme of flexible working

We believe in the importance of hosting these events to support women in the industry to network, develop new skills, and make progress in their careers by fostering a community of support.

The evening featured a talented mix of dunnhumbians and industry specialists exploring the theme of flexible working. Our panellists included dunnhumbians Blake Ryan, Global Head of Architecture and Alex Meakin, Engineering Director. Sarah Schlobohm, Senior Analytics Manager at HSBC and Lindsay Pellow, Head of Data, Insight and Analytics at We Are Discounts were also on the panel. All hosted by our very own Luce Carter, Software Developer.

Caroline Pankhurst, founder of Be Braver, started the evening off with a great interactive session on the benefits of stepping outside our comfort zones.

This was then followed by a lively panel discussion exploring flexible working from the perspective of:

  • Co-location
  • Working from home
  • Different working hours
  • Part time working

Looking at what this means for development across multiple locations and the challenges involved in allowing and enabling flexible working.

Topics discussed included practical advice and personal experience of enabling flexible working; navigating the pitfalls and challenges associated with the different types of flexible working and finally exploring where the accountability lies within an organisation for this to succeed.

Key takeaways from the evening included being brave and having open conversations around flexible working along with trusting and empowering your teams and people.

The meet-up was an inspiring event which provided a valuable opportunity to meet and learn from industry leaders and peers. It was great to see many people passionate about building careers in data and advocating for a more diverse industry.
