I retailer stanno vincendo con la private label. Una volta considerata da molti clienti poco più di un'alternativa a basso costo, la private label ora sta guidando le vendite, l'engagement e la fedeltà in misura uguale.
Come mostrato nel nostro recente report sull'MDD, si sta silenziosamente verificando una rivoluzione nel retail in tutta Europa a causa del carovita. Le vendite dell'MDD sono aumentate negli ultimi anni, con linee di marca propria che godono di un tasso di crescita annuale composto (CAGR) del 3,21% dal 2018 al 2022.
Tuttavia, il volume delle vendite non è l'unico fattore in gioco qui. Anche i clienti hanno iniziato a dare più importanza all'MDD quando si tratta delle loro preferenze di acquisto. Nei risultati dei nostri studi sul Retail Preference Index (RPI) per Italia, Francia e Spagna, abbiamo visto l'MDD diventare un importante driver di scelta. In altri termini, le persone scelgono in che insegna fare la spesa sulla base del loro prodotto a marchio.
In Francia, ad esempio, i prodotti a marchio proprio hanno un impatto significativo sulla percezione del rapporto qualità-prezzo. In altre parole, i negozi che offrono una buona selezione di MDD offrono un prezzo percepito complessivamente migliore ai clienti. In Italia e in Spagna, l'MDD è ancora più importante: gli acquirenti affermano che il prezzo, la qualità e la gamma di prodotti a marchio del retailer sono uno dei principali aspetti che considerano quando scelgono dove fare acquisti.
Questo modo di pensare ha anche un impatto nel mondo reale. I retailer con la migliore reputazione per MDD in Italia - Coop, Esselunga e Conad - si collocano al vertice delle classifiche complessive dell'RPI. Lo stesso vale in Spagna, dove Lidl, Carrefour e Mercadona guidano sia per l'MDD che per le prestazioni complessive.
Con le nostre classifiche RPI costruite parzialmente sulla share of wallet dei clienti, è chiaro che l'MDD può ora avere un impatto significativo sulle sorti di un'insegna.
Il mercato delle private label sta evolvendo. Per massimizzare le vendite, l'engagement e la fedeltà intorno a questi prodotti, tuttavia, i rivenditori devono pensarli in termini di "private brand", non solo di linea. Ciò significa che devono assegnare loro attributi di marca e supportarli con uno sforzo di marketing coerente e strategico.
Ci sono molti esempi di retailer che hanno tratto beneficio da un'ottica di private brand, come il retailer nordamericano H-E-B, che ha mantenuto la prima posizione rispetto ad Amazon nella nostra classifica annuale RPI per i generi alimentari nel 2023, non ultimo per la sua offerta di MDD. Tra i suoi concorrenti, H-E-B è stato valutato positivamente per la percezione dei clienti dei marchi privati che amano e si è classificato primo per i marchi privati in grado di far risparmiare loro denaro.
Anche questo ha un impatto commerciale: negli Stati Uniti, i retailer nel primo quartile per i "private brand che i clienti amano" hanno un CAGR medio delle vendite quinquennali dell'8,6%, rispetto al 4,7%, 2,8% e 1,3% per i rivenditori di marchi privati nel secondo, terzo e quarto quartile rispettivamente.
Quindi, cosa serve per passare da private label a private brand? I retailer devono ripensare il loro approccio alla private label. È fondamentale che le esigenze dei clienti siano al centro di tutto, dall'acquisto al marketing, per garantire il successo della transizione e promuovere l'innovazione.
